ABSTRACT: Bluetooth beacons in public areas broadcast unique addresses that are picked up by mobile devices in the vicinity. A beacon may also transmit additional elements like URL-code for advertisements, temperature on the site, and other relevant information. Beacon signals are increasingly being used for locality-based services. The strength of the beacon signal indicates the exact distance between the mobile station and the beacon, which can be used for tracking and for triggering services. The industry is rapidly developing new business models around the beacon technology, but does not seem to consider implications for security and privacy. This talk discusses challenges for security in general, and for privacy in particular, with regard to the beacon technology.
SPEAKER BIO: Atle Årnes is Specialist Director of Technology, at the Norwegian Data Protection Authority. His main fields of interest are privacy within telecommunication and internet services, eID and biometrics, as well as privacy in transport and intelligent transport systems. Atle is also involved in European and international coordination of privacy policy work.
