Out of service

The Othermill is currently out of order due to lack of proper safety routines. The Adafruit Othermill is a small form-factor CNC mill. Our Othermill is mainly intended for creating PCBs, however it may be used for other CNC operations per request.

CNC Machining

You can look at CNC machining as the inverse of 3D printing. While 3D-printing is an additive process, CNC-machining is an subtractive process. CNC machining is a great way to produce complex parts from metal, wood or plastic stock.

Before turning to CNC machining, try 3D printing. CNC machining is way less beginner friendly, restrictive in what geometries you can produce, more time consuming and more expensive than 3D-printing. The cost of errors is also greater in CNC machining than in 3D printing. A failed 3D print results in less wasted material than a failed CNC machined part. If you tell the CNC machine to destroy itself, it will do so. Finding the right settings for feed and speeds may be difficult, and may destroy both the part and the cutting tool.

A CNC machine is a dangerous piece of equipment. Improper use may result in life threatening injuries, as such never use the machine without proper training.
