Most major research funders require some form of documentation at the application stage, to explain how research data will be managed. Applicants are asked to estimate the type and scale of their research data, how data will be stored securely during the lifetime of a project and how it will be shared and preserved after the project has ended.

When proposed research involves sensitive data, researchers will be asked to consider if anonymisation or restricted data sharing is appropriate.
